2017 New Recruits

The Port Melbourne Football Club is excited to announce the signings of the following players who will be joining the club as new recruits in season 2017:

DYLAN CONWAY (Williamstown):

Dylan Conway

We welcome Conway across from our traditional bayside rivals Williamstown, fresh off a 35-goal season which saw him finish 4th in the VFL competition goal kicking. Originally from the Western Jets, 24-year-old Conway’s consistency in front of the big sticks was reflected by only failing to register a goal on one occasion in season 2016 (the Seagulls’ Preliminary Final loss to Casey). Following his victory in the 2015 A. Todd Medal as the Development League’s Best and Fairest player, Conway also managed to kick three goals in Williamstown’s 2015 VFL Grand Final win against Box Hill. Conway will be able to play as a high half-forward and his obvious ability in front of goal will be a welcome addition to a Borough forward structure that often failed to generate high scores this year.

Mitch Wooffindin

Midfielder Mitch Wooffindin returns to Port Melbourne after a one-year stint at Eastern Football League club Knox. The club was disappointed to lose the 22-year-old initially, but are delighted to welcome him back following a standout Best and Fairest-winning season with the Falcons. Wooffindin debuted with the Borough in 2011 and has since chalked up 75 Senior games. He will be a much-needed addition to our midfield stocks and still has plenty of good footy in front of him. All the best ‘Woofy’!

SAM PICKESS (Frankston):

Sam Pickess

We welcome Sam Pickess to the Borough after one year at Frankston in 2016, his first in the VFL. Previously he played TAC Cup with the Dandenong Stingrays. Sam has a strong body and plays his best footy across half back and through the midfield. He played 3 senior matches this year including kicking a critical goal in the Dolphins win against Coburg. Welcome Sam!

ROBIN NAHAS (North Melbourne):

Robin Nahas

He is just as excited as you are Borough fans….Robin Nahas is back at North Port Oval! Nahas joins us again after an excellent AFL career spanning 8 years and 117 games at Richmond and North Melbourne. His much needed pace, elite pressure and goal scoring ability will be showcased in an abundance in season 2017! Welcome home Robin!

CHARLIE KELSO (Sandringham):

Charlie Kelso

A BIG Announcement! The signing of 208cm Charlie Kelso crossing from the Sandringham Zebras. Charlie has developed nicely under St Kilda-listed ruckmen for 3 years and is now is ready to step up to Senior VFL football. A really exciting future for Charlie awaits at the Borough!

AARON WILSON (Frankston):

Aaron Wilson

Another exciting signing in young gun Aaron Wilson from the Frankston FC. Aaron caught the eye of recruiters in his U/18 year with the Dandenong Stingrays and represented Vic Country at the National Championships. He is a 192cm forward with a great set of hands that has played 24 VFL games, and producing 21 goals. Welcome to the Borough Aaron!

Yarran Jaffer Williams - PNG

We’re delighted to announce excitement machine Yarran Jaffer-Williams as the latest addition to our 2017 playing list! Yarran joins us from the Casey Scorpions and Port fans can expect to see a small forward/midfielder with electrifying pace, great fitness and elite tackling pressure. The 21-year-old has previously been a representative of the U/18 Sydney Swans Academy and Sydney Swans NEAFL team, as well as the U/16 NSW/ACT Rams and the U/16 NSW/ACT Indigenous State Squad back in 2011. There’s still plenty of upside to come with Yarran and we look forward to seeing what he can do at the Borough next year!

DYLAN ATKINS (Dandenong Stingrays – TAC Cup):

Dylan Atkins

We welcome 198cm key defender Dylan Atkins out of the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup. Dylan was most recently a member of the AIS-AFL Academy who reads the play well and is considered to be an elite kick for his size. We wish Dylan all the best at the Borough!

ANTHONY VELLA (Cranbourne FC):

Anthony Vella

Our newest signing for season 2017 is Anthony Vella, who we welcome fresh off a stellar Premiership and Best & Fairest-winning season with the Cranbourne Football Club! Vella is a 187cm half back/midfielder with clean skills, elite speed and strong endurance. Vella also covers the ground very well for his size and overall, is an astute pick up who has come to Port Melbourne in a bid to take his footballing journey to the next level. We welcome Anthony to the Borough and wish him all the best!

KADE RENOOY (Gippsland Power – TAC Cup):

Kade Renooy

We are excited to announce yet another addition to the Borough for season 2017, as we welcome Gippsland Power product Kade Renooy! Kade is a talented and skilful small forward who can also play a role in defence if required. Renooy has chalked up 30 TAC Cup games in the past two seasons, and averaged 20 possessions per game in 2016. He then went on to play a big role in Maffra’s Premiership victory alongside ex-Borough champion Sam Pleming in the Gippsland Football League, booting two goals in the decider. Another excellent young player sure to generate his fair share of excitement amongst the Borough army! Welcome Kade!

Dillon Viojo-Rainbow

We are delighted to add to our current collection of players with recent AFL experience ahead of season 2017, as ex-Blue Dillon Viojo-Rainbow becomes the latest new Borough! Viojo-Rainbow played in every game with Carlton’s VFL affiliate the Northern Blues in 2016, averaging just over 14 disposals and six contested possessions per match. Formerly with the Western Jets, Viojo-Rainbow has shown ability to play in a variety of positions, but has been most suited through the midfield and off the half-back flank where he can use his speed and foot skills. Still only 20 years of age, Dillon still has plenty of development to come, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for him in the mighty red and blue!

SAM MICHAEL (Oakleigh Chargers – TAC Cup):

Sam Michael

Our latest 2017 recruit is Sam Michael, who we welcome fresh out of the Oakleigh Chargers program! Sam is a 181cm utility who can play at either end of the ground, but has impressed most when playing in defence. Sam averaged 13.5 possessions per game in the TAC Cup this year and has already impressed onlookers on the training track with his ball use. We’re thrilled to have this youngster on board the Borough and wish him all the best!

ETHAN HANLEY (Oakleigh Chargers – TAC Cup):

Ethan Hanley

Ethan is another ex-Chargers youngster who officially joins us for season 2017. Ethan is only small in stature, but has already impressed with his endurance, footy smarts and ability to find space. Ethan is likely to become the youngest player on our list for 2017, given he will only turn 18 on the 31st of December. With lots of development to come, Ethan is only going to get better and we hope to see him around the club for many years to come!

ISAAC CONWAY (Werribee):

After a long time between announcements, we are now excited to confirm that ex-Werribee star Isaac Conway has signed with the Borough for 2017! At just 21 years of age, Isaac has already compiled a glittering football resume, having been initially listed by the Brisbane Lions in the 2013 AFL Rookie Draft and captain of the Queensland side that competed in the 2013 National Championships. Following his time at the Lions, Conway was recruited by Werribee ahead of the 2015 season, where he made an immediate impact to be named as a half-forward flanker in the 2015 VFL Team of the Year. A hard-nosed inside midfielder, Conway has joined the Borough in search of more consistent Senior opportunity and will be another welcome addition to the club’s midfield depth. Welcome Isaac!

We’re stoked about this one! Borough fans better get used to seeing Eli Templeton in the red and blue, following his recent commitment for season 2017! Eli is fresh out of the AFL system, having played 14 games across the last three seasons for St. Kilda. Despite limited exposure at Senior level last year, Eli continued to perform amazingly well at VFL level for the Saints’ affiliate Sandringham, as he averaged 26 disposals per game and finished 5th in the JJ Liston Trophy count. Eli will be yet another player who will be able to run through the midfield, increasing our depth and the fierce competition for spots likely to prevail entering Round 1. Welcome to Eli!

If one ex-St. Kilda player wasn’t enough to get Borough fans excited today, what about a second in Brodie Murdoch? Brodie has recently signed at the Borough after spending four seasons on the Saints’ list and managing 22 AFL games. A strongly-built rebounding defender, Brodie was another player who played some outstanding football with St. Kilda’s affiliate Sandringham, as he averaged nearly 21 disposals and 6 marks across his 14 VFL games. The 22-year-old also possesses a penetrating kick, which will come into good effect as he aims to successfully combine with other skilful Borough flankers such as Damian Mascitti and Dillon Viojo-Rainbow. We’re absolutely delighted to have him on board – welcome and best of luck to Brodie!

ASH KRAKAUER (Sandringham Dragons – TAC Cup):

We welcome the highly-rated Ash Krakauer to the Borough for season 2017, as he joins us fresh off a Premiership-winning year for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. Ash is a skilful, hard-working and opportunistic small forward who booted two crucial goals in the Grand Final win, however he can also run through the midfield as required. Ash has been among the standouts on the training track in the pre-season so far and we look forward to seeing him in action as the season draws closer. Welcome Ash!

JESSE SMITH (Sandringham Dragons – TAC Cup):

Jesse Smith is another ex-member of the Sandringham Dragons TAC Cup footy factory, who is a 199cm developing ruckman. Jesse’s ability is best reflected by his representation of the Under 18 Vic Metro squad last year, and there is certainly likely to be Senior opportunities available for him at the Borough this season. We wish him all the best!

We can officially welcome another ex-Frankston listed player in Jeremy Gleeson, who joins the Borough for season 2017. Jeremy is a strongly-built, medium-sized forward who can also play higher up the ground. Jeremy brings recent VFL experience, having managed to play four Senior games last year; and is another addition to our younger brigade with plenty of good football still ahead of him. Welcome Jeremy!

Jesse Johnson joins Port Melbourne from over Bass Strait, fresh from a very impressive 2016 season with Devonport FC in the Tasmanian State League. Jesse was previously a member of the Tassie Mariners under 18’s squad, and overall is an incredibly versatile player who has performed well as a tall defender, key forward and also in the ruck. Having made the brave decision to move to Melbourne in a bid to take his footballing journey to the next level, we trust all Borough fans will make Jesse feel welcome and we wish him all the very best!

JAMES PULLAN (Oakleigh Chargers – TAC Cup):

We welcome developing tall James Pullan to the Borough from our aligned TAC Cup side the Oakleigh Chargers. James has already displayed an excellent set of hands in marking contests on the training track, as well as a terrific leap (as demonstrated by the photo, #63!). We’re wrapt to have yet another quality Chargers youngster on board for season 2017, and wish James the best of luck!

HUGH JOHNSON (Sandringham Dragons – TAC Cup):

Our stockpiling of ex-TAC Cup talent continues as we welcome Hugh Johnson from the Sandringham Dragons. Hugh is a good-sized player who can perform a variety of different roles due to his outstanding athletic ability. Has also displayed some very polished skills on the training track thus far. Good luck to Hugh at the Borough!

Lachlan Treverton is a developing young key position prospect who joins us from Old Haileybury FC. According to Coach Gary Ayres, the 21-year-old, 198cm Treverton has already shown a solid level of mobility and competitiveness on the training track that will hold him in good stead once the season gets underway. He will be looking to perform a key position role at either end of the ground, with the ability to also fill a ‘pinch-hitting’ duty in the ruck as required. Another talented young player with plenty of long-term upside. Welcome to the Borough Lachlan!

JAKE O’BRIEN (Seymour Lions FC):

Jake O’Brien is a 19-year-old small-mid forward who has successfully managed to work his way onto the Borough’s list for 2017 having completed his second pre-season with us. Jake has plenty of footy smarts and uses the ball very well. He put together a very consistent season for the Lions last year booting 22 goals, and will no doubt provide a further addition to the depth in our front half. Congratulations and best of luck to Jake!

James Harrison is a speedy and impressive 19-year-old product who joins the Borough from Western Region Football League powerhouse Deer Park. James’ best attributes are his elite acceleration and strong work rate, which should both prove to be an asset to the club this year off the half-back line and the wing. There’s no doubt that James has been a standout on the training track during pre-season so far and we’re delighted to have him board!

WILL GOSS (Oakleigh Chargers – TAC Cup):

Will Goss is a small versatile player who joins us from the Oakleigh Chargers/Heidelberg FC. Will possesses an excellent kick and good all-around skills. Has also shown the ability to hit the scoreboard as a forward. Welcome Will!

CHRIS CAREY (Warragul FC):

Chris Carey is a competitive ruckman who has made the venture down to Port Melbourne from Warragul FC. Chris has deservedly earned a spot on the Borough’s playing list for 2017 after completing a very good pre-season. He is the son of Steve Carey who played 112 games of Senior VFL football with Essendon and Geelong in the 1980’s. Welcome and good luck to Chris!

SHANE VALENTI (Old Haileybury FC):

It’s official – he’s BACK! After much speculation since commencing pre-season training with the Borough in November, we can confirm that two-time JJ Liston Trophy winner and champion of the VFL Shane Valenti has officially signed with us for season 2017! Shane’s record in the competition speaks for itself: 149 games, a two-time Liston winner, 2011 Premiership player and three-time VFL Team of the Year member. Shane has been cut down by injuries during the last two years he has spent at suburban level with Noble Park and Old Haileybury, but has returned to the Borough to re-join former teammates such as Dwyer, Cain and Pinwill and hopefully taste the ultimate success once again. Welcome back to the little champ!

He’s a Premiership player with our biggest rival and one of the VFL competition’s most electrifying small forwards….and now, he’s become a Borough!! We are delighted to finally confirm the news that Anthony Anastasio has signed with us for season 2017! Anthony has long been recognised as a dynamic and dangerous goal sneak who can also apply a huge amount of tackling pressure on opposition defenders through his pace and ferocity around the contest. Last year, he was also able to add another string to his armoury by gathering possessions further up the ground. We are delighted to welcome another player of Anthony’s quality to Port Melbourne, and wish him all the very best of luck!

We can confirm the late addition of Dale Hoghton to our playing list for season 2017. Dale has most recently come from the Premiership-winning Footscray VFL list in 2016, where he managed to play 8 games. Before that, Dale was a Best and Fairest winner with Leongatha in their all-conquering 2015 season (pictured), and also a member of Williamstown’s squad between 2011 and 2014, where he played 15 Senior VFL games. At 185cm, Dale has predominantly played as a winger/half-back and will be a very handy acquisition as we finally put the finishing touches on our 2017 playing group. We welcome Dale and wish him well!
