Borough and Gulls Strike Johnson-Callahan Cup

Port Melbourne and Williamstown, two of the oldest sporting clubs in Australia, have recently announced their collaboration to strike the ‘Johnson-Callahan Cup’ in honour of each respective club legend, Frank Johnson and Gerry Callahan.

With the season-opening clash on Saturday April 6th set to mark the first occasion of football being played under lights at Williamstown’s ‘Downer Oval’ at Point Gellibrand, the two teams will also be striving to add the Johnson-Callahan Cup to their proud trophy collection.

The second of the two clubs’ clashes this season will take place as part of the Borough’s now-traditional Round 11 ‘Frank Johnson Heritage Day’ fixture on Sunday 16th June. That day, along with every other home-and-away clash forthwith between Port Melbourne and Williamstown will see the Johnson-Callahan Cup up for grabs.

Frank Johnson’s career highlights make for extraordinary reading:

Port Melbourne Football Club:

– Played from: 1950 – 1957
– 165 Games
– 52 Goals
– 5 times Best and Fairest winner: 1951, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1956.
– Liston Trophy 1952
– Coronation Premiership Player 1953
– All Australian 1953 and 1956 (named Captain)
– Captain / Coach 1956/57
– Captain of the PMFC Team of the Century
– Life Member of the VFL/VFA

South Warrnambool Football Club:

South Melbourne Football Club:

– Played from: 1960 – 1964
– 64 Games
– 38 Goals
– 1960 Best and Fairest winner

In 2007, Frank became the only VFL/VFA player to ever be inducted into the Australian Rules Football League Hall of Fame.

Since 1990, Victorian players who have been deemed Best on Ground in the biennial VFL State Game have been awarded the ‘Frank Johnson Medal’.

The first two seasons of the Borough’s Frank Johnson Heritage Day has seen the Port Melbourne player adjudged to be best afield by the Johnson Family awarded the Frank Johnson Tribute Medal.

Williamstown’s Callahan actually played much of his football against Frank during the 1950’s, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest players, coaches and personalities that the VFL/VFA competition has ever seen.
