Borough Kicking Goals in the Community

The vision of the Community Pillar of the Port Melbourne Football Club’s Strategic Plan is to be the heart of our community, setting the standards for today and tomorrow. We are here to stay, providing opportunities for everyone. Our community matters to us.

Our values:

• Purposeful action
• Determined resilience
• Respectful inclusion
• Sustainable growth

Our key priorities:

• We are at the heart of our community
• Make meaningful connections that provide ongoing value for our communities
• We are seen as an inclusive community leader in the City of Port Phillip
• We build connected business communities

Anchored by our core values, we aim to have a positive social impact on our community. We reach over 50% of the population in the City of Port Phillip with our community activities. Our membership base is as diverse as it is passionate and is spread throughout the State; beyond the City of Port Phillip and the immediate VFL community. Through our website, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages, we connect with thousands of people in the community each day.

2019 Community Programs:

MS Society:
The MS Society was invited to our Round 6 home game against Werribee. MS Home Lottery Ambassadors Brenda and Mark Fisher were our guests at our President’s Lunch and spoke of their experience living with MS while volunteers were at hand to sell MS Dream Home Lottery tickets and accept donations. All proceeds from the day benefit people living with MS.
We plan to work further with the MS Society in 2019 and beyond.

Port Phillip Specialist School:
The African proverb It takes a village to raise a child resonates deeply with us at the Borough which is why we continue to work with our friends at the Port Philip Specialist School. Whether it’s connecting with our fabulous Club Partners to help with construction projects around the school, welcoming students to help us at the Club or simply providing our facilities at the Sandridge Events Centre free of charge for its fundraising activities, we are committed to providing assistance to ensure the Port Phillip Specialist School can continue to provide vital services within the City of Port Phillip.
Our Round 9 clash against Collingwood on Sunday 2nd June will see us once again celebrate the achievements of the staff and students at our President’s Luncheon prior to the commencement of the match.

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation:
The Borough will once again team up with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation in 2019 to deliver a themed President’s Luncheon and match day as part of the Round 13 VFL clash with Footscray on Saturday 29th June.
In 2019 we are launching an Everyday Hero campaign to assist The Alanna and Madeline Foundation to fund a series of workshops in schools which focus on cyber safety and bullying. Our goal is to raise $10K. You can help us reach our goal by donating here:
As part of our partnership, our Round 13 President’s Luncheon will include a formal presentation from a representative of the Foundation explaining how your donation can help keep children safe. You can also purchase ‘Buddy Bags’ that are backpacks filled with basic, essential items for thousands of children in emergency accommodation. By donating you can help us keep kids safe in the community.

Lord Somers Camp & Powerhouse:
Our newest member to the Borough Community Program is the Lord Somers Camp and Powerhouse, a diverse and intergenerational member-led community organisation which implements challenging and experience based programs that engage with people of all ages.
Based locally, the purpose of the Lord Somers Camp & Powerhouse is to serve others and strengthen communities. Its principals, which include embracing social inclusion and diversity, align strongly with those of the Port Melbourne Football Club. Its CEO, Tim Ryan is a former Port Melbourne Football Club player and is well versed in the culture of our Club, so it’s little wonder our Organisations came together.
We will host Tim and his team for our Round 15 clash against the Northern Blues on Saturday 13th July. All proceeds of our President’s Luncheon Match Day Raffle will kick start fundraising to help a girl and boy between the ages of 16 ½ and 18 attend the Lord Somers Camp & Powerhouse Big Camp in January 2020.
Big Camp teaches leadership, team work and encourages celebration of diversity, leaving participants with a greater understanding of their own and others’ potential and gaining new insights into how they can make a positive impact on their communities.

Our Round 17 clash with Coburg will be a chance for us to learn about the great work Reclink does in the community. Reclink provides opportunities to disadvantaged communities through Australia and we look forward to working together.

Tom Lahiff Memorial Cup:
From little things, big things grow! Named in honour of one of Port Melbourne’s favourite sons, from its inception in 1989 comprising one pool of competitors, the Tom Lahiff Memorial Cup has now grown into a two day tournament involving 10 local primary schools with over 300 boys and girls participating in 3 pools of competition.
Dates and details for the 2019 competition are just about to be announced so watch this space.

Port Melbourne Football Club Primary School Roadshow:
Our 2019 PMFC Primary School Roadshow is just about to kick off. We will be conducting skills clinics at local primary schools throughout the City of Port Phillip run exclusively by Port Melbourne Football Club players and coaches. A full schedule will be released shortly.

As an integral part of the Victorian football community, we also stand proudly in support of AFL Victoria initiatives in promoting Beyond Blue, Sock It To MND, Love the Game and Towards Zero throughout the 2019 VFL season.
