BOROUGH UNVEILS VFLW INDIGNEOUS JERSEY
PRESS RELEASE
The Port Melbourne Football Club have unveiled their indigenous guernsey ahead of Indigenous Round this weekend.
Designed by proud Yorta Yorta artist Ngalnya Atkinson, the guernsey pays respect to Wurundjeri country which is the land on which the football club stands.
The design features the symbol for water through the middle representing the Yarra River that runs through Wurundjeri country. It also features handprints on each sign which is paying homage to all those people, across the club’s 150 years, who have helped to lift the club and make it what it is today. Other elements on the guernsey represent the club’s 150 year milestone.
“Being able to design this guernsey with the Borough has been fantastic” said Ngalnya
“Sharing my culture and educating people, in the same way my elders did for me has been the best part of the journey” Ngalnya reflected.
In the club’s 150 year history this is a first time the VFLW team has worn an indigenous guernsey.
“The team wanted to be part of Indigenous Round and this was lead by Mifsud and was 100% supported by the playing group” commented Port Melbourne General Manager Sophie Williams
The match will also feature Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony and the two teams will exchange gifts prior to the bounce down.
The game starts at 1:05pm with formalities beginning from 12:30pm on field.
