From One Red and Blue to Another: Dion Johnstone Joins the Borough

Port Melbourne are delighted to announce another key signing ahead of season 2019 by welcoming ex-Demons listed youngster Dion Johnstone.

Initially from the Borough’s TAC Cup aligned Oakleigh Chargers side and selected with Pick 64 in the 2016 AFL National Draft, Johnstone’s best attributes have predominantly been his pressure and tackling ability around the forward line.

The Demons then decided to try to turn him into a defender and he worked closely with mentor Neville Jetta on his defensive craft in season 2018.

Despite not playing an AFL game in his two seasons on the list, 20-year-old Johnstone put together some impressive performances for Melbourne’s VFL affiliate Casey; but unfortunately missed the Grand Final loss against Box Hill Hawks due to suspension.

Port Melbourne Football Manager Glenn Balmforth said Borough fans can expect to see a dynamic player with plenty of “flair and skill”.

“Obviously Dion’s experience on an AFL list will be very beneficial for our playing group,” Balmforth said.

“He was primarily drafted as a forward, but played a majority of his football in defence at Melbourne, so he should be able to give us some flexibility around the ground as well.”

Johnstone is keen to once again put his name up in lights for possible redrafting at AFL level, and expressed his desire to be involved in a standalone VFL club environment to ensure he receives the best possible opportunity to do so.

We welcome Dion to the Borough family for season 2019, and wish him all the very best.
