Last Friday, following many months of hard work by the PMFC Board, the CIty of Port Phillip Council (through Mayor Bernadene Voss), Mr Martin Foley (ALP), Mr Josh Burns (ALP ) and AFL Victoria, plans were laid down for the redevelopment of North Port Oval in 2019 and 2020. At a cost in excess of $5 million (Council contribution $1.95 mill, Federal ALP contribution $1.00 mill, State ALP contribution $2.00 mill, AFL contribution (to be confirmed))once plans are finalised, we shall see the following stadium improvements:
– surface redevelopment including drainage and other ground works (commencing in coming 2 weeks)
– construction of broadcast quality lighting to facilitate AFLW and VFL night games (2019/20)
– new changing rooms for our Women’s teams (2019)
– a gymnasium for the players (2019)
– improvements to spectator facilities (2019/20).
Mr Michael Shulman (PMFC President) was quoted as follows:
“Two years ago, we were contemplating closing the doors on this great club. Today we have secured our future as the leading VFL club in the competition, and we will now be able to further develop our Women’s program with a view to playing VFLW in 2020. Expansion of our junior development programs and community service operations will also be facilitated by this capital expenditure funding.
Its a truly pivotal day in the history of PMFC, I cant thank enough Bernadene and her fellow councillors, Martin, Josh and AFL Victoria (in particular John Hook and Ricky Bell) for their support and trust in what we stand for at PMFC. 2019 and 2020 cant come round fast enough at North Port Oval, the home of the mighty Port Melbourne Football Club – its exciting times ahead”.
