REPORT: Borough Women Brave at Home in Close Loss

Our Port Melbourne Borough women had a narrow loss to Beaconsfield at the North Port Oval.

It was a first term our women would like to forget, as Beaconsfield was cleaner with the disposal of the ball at the ground. Most of the quarter was played in the Beaconsfield forward half of the ground. Beaconsfield made it hard for our women to break away with clear possession and kept our women scoreless for the opening term. At quarter time Beaconsfield led by 11 points over our women.

The contest in the second stanza tightened up, because our women lifted their pressure and intensity around the ball. Our women tidied up all over the ground and made it difficult for Beaconsfield to have repeated inside forward 50s. Nayely Borg snap kicked our women’s first goal of the match out of the congested pack. Borg found space where there was none to get her boot on the football to score the goal. The veteran Belinda Ousley played a great first half of football. Ousley was everywhere. At the main break our women were down by 10 points.

It was a superb third quarter of footy from our women. The game opened up for both teams in their forward 50s and turned into a shootout. Our women scored three goals to Beaconsfield’s four goals.

Tiana Assini kicked a goal of a nice goal assist from Marina Skinner. Jade Garcia marked the football about 40m out from goal. Garcia looked like she was going to have a shot at goal but she fooled the opposition and kicked the football to Mandy Seath who marked it. Seath put through the much-needed goal.

Olivia Brown also slotted a goal through the big sticks for our women. At three quarter time Beaconsfield had an advantage of 15 points over our women.

Our women continued their strong effort from the third quarter into the final term. They gave it their all in a fine quarter. Most of the game play was played in our forward 50 but our women’s kicking at goal let them down as they scored one goal and five behinds. Assini slotted through our only goal of the final term after a great handball from Jen Osman. The second half from our women was a beauty.

It was a tale of two halves, Beaconsfield played strongly in the first half and our women owned the second half. Our women had their chances to get the win, but their kicking at goal let them down at the crucial stages. Beaconsfield narrowly defeated our women by four points.

Our women will be back in action in round 10 at Traralgon on Sunday 15th of July.
