REPORT: Borough Women Play Out First Home Match at North Port

History was made again in round 2 of the Southern Football Netball League, as our Port Melbourne Borough women played their first match at North Port Oval against Cranbourne. Our women did not get the result they would have hoped at home, but there were a lot of improvements from last weekend and our women played well in front of the Borough faithful.

The opening quarter was a tight one from both teams. Our women were on top in the first half of the term and looked strong in attack. Our women scored their first two goals in the Port Melbourne Guernsey and were pretty excited when these were kicked. Bronte James booted through our opening goal. Then Jen Osman soon followed with our second goal of the quarter and our women looked to be in control. However, for the second half of the term Cranbourne started to get on top in the contest and they slotted through the next two goals. At quarter time, the scores were tied at 12 each.

Our women started strongly in the second stanza, but unfortunately all their hard work did not pay off with a goal. Cranbourne booted four goals and were getting on top in all facets of the match. The scores at half time were Cranbourne were up by 25 points over our women.

The third term was another tough quarter for our women who continued to fight, but still could not get reward for all their effort. Cranbourne kept our women scoreless again in the third term, as they scored five goals in a dominant quarter. At three quarter time, our women were down by 45 points.

Cranbourne booted through three goals and kept our women scoreless again in a hard fought final quarter. It was an improved term for our women who had heaps of inside 50s, but their kicks inside 50 in the second half let them down. Our women just needed to be a bit cleaner with their football skills. Cranbourne ended up winning the match by 79 points over our women.

It was a difficult second half for our Borough women, but they kept on fighting till the end. This was an improved match from our women, because they booted through their first two goals in the Port Melbourne Borough Guernsey and they had improved a lot from their first round match.

Our women will have a bye in round 3 and will be back in action in round 4 on Sunday the 27th of May.
