Round 10 Milestone Men: Eli and Mack Notch up a Borough 50

Sunday’s Round 10 VFL clash with Frankston will mark a milestone for two of the Borough’s shining lights of recent years, Eli Templeton and Mack Rivett, as they run out in Borough colours for the 50th time.

Both have followed different paths to notch up a ‘half century’, but both have proven to be equally important cogs in the side’s recent successes.

For Templeton, Port Melbourne became his new footballing home on the eve of 2017 after three seasons on the AFL list of St. Kilda; and he has seemingly raced to 50 games having barely missed a beat since joining the Borough.

He went on to become a stunning contributor in the club’s Premiership success, finishing second in the Best and Fairest count, before backing it up with a third-place finish in 2018.

The ever-consistent Templeton – still only 23 years of age – said he was thrilled to reach the milestone in such a short amount of time.

“Obviously it’s an honour to pull on the Port Melbourne jumper for one game, but to get to 50 so quickly since I signed here after my stint at St. Kilda is incredibly rewarding,” he said.

Rivett similarly expressed a terrific amount of satisfaction in being able to reach his 50 games, despite a few injury setbacks in recent seasons; which was interspersed with a remarkable Jack McFarlane Medal victory as best and fairest ahead of Templeton last year.

“It’s been five seasons of ups and downs – and body management – but I have loved every minute at the club so far,” Rivett said.

The individual milestones arrive on the crest of a team wave at the moment, with the side having notched up six wins in succession after the opening two losses of the year.

Templeton said the taste of the 2017 Premiership that he was lucky enough to experience still lingered and was driving those remaining members of the side towards a similar feeling in the coming September.

“The team’s form is great at the moment,” he said.

“We’ve played some good footy against good opposition and hopefully we can set ourselves up for another tilt (at a Flag) later in the year.”

Whilst Templeton is hoping for a repeat of the 2017 success, Rivett missed out on the victorious Grand Final side due to injury, and said the majority of his motivation was coming from missing out.

“Premiership success is what is driving me this year,” he said.

“I am jealous of all my teammates that have a Premiership Medal.”

Templeton has enjoyed a switch back to defence from the midfield in recent weeks, which he said had been “good fun”.

His last two matches in that role have seen him rack up 29 possessions and 31 possessions respectively.

“The move has been great in terms of giving the side more drive, but also helped me make a few changes in my game personally as well,” Templeton said.

On the flip side, Rivett frustratingly sat out the first part of the season due to a long-standing ankle issue, but is now three games in to a return that he hopes will continue to gain momentum in the coming weeks.

“The body is getting there, it’s all about management and being smart about what I do in terms of all the extras and little things,” he said.

“’Ayresy’ has so far been looking after me to a degree by throwing me forward so I am happy about that.”

“There’s a real buzz around the club at the moment, and it’s super exciting for everyone involved.”

The club would like to congratulate both Eli and Mack on notching up 50 games, and wish them all the best in Sunday’s game.

Action will get underway at SkyBus Stadium at 2:00pm.
