‘Tis the Season to be Jolley: Ben Jolley Joins the Red and Blue

Former Williamstown Premiership captain and VFL great Ben Jolley has officially signed with his long-time arch rivals Port Melbourne for season 2019.

Jolley recently announced his retirement from the Seagulls, but has now put pen to paper with the Borough after a very positive recent discussion with Head Coach Gary Ayres and Football Manager Glenn Balmforth about what his future in football may hold.

With 269 VFL games to his name – 217 of which were at Williamstown, a club record – Jolley’s numbers stack up with some of the all-time greats of Victorian football.

He won the Seagulls’ best and fairest a staggering four times, and a six-year stint as captain of the fellow standalone club was highlighted by the 2015 Grand Final success over the Box Hill Hawks.

Jolley has also been named in the VFL Team of the Year on seven consecutive occasions, twice represented the Victorian state team, and is a Life Member of both Williamstown and the VFL.

Despite recently turning 32 years of age, Jolley’s ability to win the ball in season 2018 was still absolutely unquestionable, as he averaged nearly 24 disposals across his 16 games.

Port Melbourne Football Manager Glenn Balmforth was understandably ecstatic with Jolley’s commitment.

“At VFL level, players with over 250 games of experience don’t come around very often,” Balmforth said.

“After many fantastic battles over the years against him, we are absolutely delighted that somebody of Ben’s calibre has chosen to continue his career at the Borough.”

Balmforth said that his discussions with Jolley had indicated an extraordinary hunger for continued success in the VFL competition and a willingness to play whatever role in the team Ayres saw fit.

“What we are getting is a player who is an absolute competitor on the field and an absolute quality character off it,” he said.

“The way he prepares himself is second to none and Ben will no doubt make a significant contribution both on and off the field in 2019 and beyond.”

He joins fellow members of the Seagulls’ 2015 Premiership Dylan Conway and Anthony Anastasio to since make the switch across the bay to Adcon Stadium.

After several years’ worth of memorable battles against Ben, the Port Melbourne Football Club are thrilled to now welcome Ben, his wife Jane and daughters Ada and Lucy to the club; and can’t wait to see him don the red and blue in season 2019!
