Game Day Preview: Port Melbourne v Frankston

This Saturday night, the Port Melbourne Borough will play host to the visiting Frankston Football Club for their opening home game of this VFL season, hosted at ETU Stadium.

Coming off the back of a narrow defeat to the hands of Brisbane last weekend, Brendan McCartney hopes to get his Port Melbourne boys in the win column.

On the other side of the field, it was an opening round bye for Frankston, as they come into this match with fresh legs and a desire to start their year strong.

It was only last season that Frankston found themselves in the finals series, however it was a 90-point smackdown from eventual runners up Southport that sent the Dolphins home early.

Looking to make their way back to the finals, they hope to kickstart their year with a triumph over the Borough.

Port Melbourne had a troublesome season in 2024, stringing together six wins and finishing 16th on the table.

The Borough would love to bounce back and make an early season statement against a top 10 side to build confidence within the playing group.

Having played each other in a preseason game only a month ago, these two clubs come into this matchup knowing exactly what it will take to triumph.

That preseason clash saw Port Melbourne come out on top, so Frankston will hope to get one back this Saturday.

The weekend’s matchup will be won in the midfield. Highlighted by team of the year midfielder Tom Murphy, Frankston will come into this contest feeling good about their on-ball unit.

Despite that, the Borough’s inside mids showed out against Brisbane last weekend, as their centre stoppage work was instrumental in getting points on the board.

Spearheaded by Charlie Lazzaro who had a standout performance last week, expect him to go toe to toe with Murphy around the contest.

With last year’s Jim ‘Frosty’ Medal winner Billy Gowers having left Port Melbourne in the offseason, that is one less target up forward for Frankston to focus on.

Two ball hungry midfield units will ultimately set the tone for this matchup that should make for an exciting contest.

Be sure to tune into the coverage of Port Melbourne vs Frankston this Saturday 29th March. Tune in for a 7.10PM bounce from ETU Stadium, home of the Port Melbourne Borough.
