Round 3 of the 2025 rebel VFLW season saw the Darebin Falcons take on the Port Melbourne Borough at Genis Oval, Preston. The Borough got the win and the ladder lifter they were after, cruising to a 46-point win, 8 goals 5 (53) to 1 goal 1 (7), over the Falcons.
Both teams were making for a close contest in the opening quarter, with the margin only a goal in Port Melbourne’s favour, but the Borough’s pressure and inside 50 game, then got a hold of the contest, with the red and blue kicking 6 goals 5 to 1 behind after quarter time.
Key standouts for the Borough saw Katlyin O’Keefe up forward, Mia Caffry in the middle and Lauren Caruso down back. O’Keefe finished with 2 goals putting her on top of the Rohenna Young Medal table as well as having 9 disposals and 6 tackles. Her speed was on display with some great running efforts including a great crumbing goal for her first of the match. Caffry had a season high 20 touches as well as 7 tackles. Caruso continued her blistering start to her 2025 campaign with another strong performance down back with 20 touches, 8 tackles and 5 clearances.
Midfielder Ava Seton had one of her best games of the season so far, ranking up 18 disposals -with 14 of those being contested-, a game high 14 tackles and 6 clearances. The former Brisbane Lions Academy product was a damaging concern for Darebin with her tough as nails and high intensity approach across the ground.
The Borough improved upon their inside 50 game from the previous matches, smashing Darebin (47) to (21), giving their forwards plenty of scoring power opportunities. Although a disappointing result for Darebin coach Lachlan Walker and his girls, the club would be able to take some positives from the game including winning the hit-outs (48) to (35) and clearances (34) to (30).
The win now puts Port Melbourne into the top 4 with the victory an important percentage booster at this point of the season. Next week sees Port Melbourne look to take on 5th placed Williamstown on Sunday afternoon in a game that ensures to be a close one while Darebin remain at home for a clash against 8th placed Collingwood on Saturday afternoon.
