Match Report: VFL Round 1 v GWS Giants

Round 1 kicked off in Sydney at Blacktown International Sportspark for season 2022. Unfortunately, the wet weather conditions along with strong marking from GWS, lead Port Melbourne to an 18-point loss to the Giants.

There were 10 debutants for the Borough on Sunday. In the mix, Marcus Lentini walked away from his first game with 29 disposals and his first goal. Jesse Cucinotta also had a strong impact with 26 game disposals, 5 marks and 5 tackles. On his debut, Mitch Lewis proved to be strong around the ball with 6 tackles.

Borough entered the game strong with Fletcher Roberts scoring the first goal of the game 1 minute in. Port Melbourne went into the quarter time break 12 points down.

The second quarter involved inaccuracy from GWS opening up the opportunity to tighten the score margin. The ever-reliable Harvey Hooper proved his strength around the ball finishing the game with the club match high, 29 disposals. Half time saw Borough 17 points down with some work to do in the second half.

8 scoring shots proved promising in the third quarter, however, only one lead to a major score from debutant Marcus Lentini. 7 behinds meant that GWS had more opportunities to score and increase their lead taking Borough into the last break of the game with a 26-point lead.

Despite chasing the win all day, the pressure remained high in the final quarter. Brough were able to decrease the margin with goals from Harvey Hooper and a second game goal from Nash Holmes.

Walking away from round 1 there’s plenty of fresh talent around the club that will bring Borough up in the next few rounds and the remainder of the season.
