Port Melbourne capped off their 2022 seasons with four awards at the VFL & VFLW Awards Night on Monday at Crown Palladium.

23-year-old, Ethan Phillips received the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal as the VFL Rising Star. The award is eligible for players under the age of 24, who have not been AFL listed and awarded annually to the most promising young talent. Playing in the backline, Phillips became known for his marking ability taking 147 marks over 15 matches (avg. 9.8 per match). He also averaged 19.5 disposals for the season and kicked a goal against Frankston.

Phillips was also named in the Smithy’s VFL Team of the Year, lining up at full back.

Drafted to the Essendon Football Club for the current AFLW season, Olivia Barton added another feather to her cap by being named in the rebel VFLW Team of the Year (interchange). An outstanding second year in the VFLW, Barton shone brightly averaging 16.8 disposals over 13 games and was a staple in the backline for Port Melbourne.

Kaitlyn O’Keefe was also named in the 30-player rebel VFLW Team of the Year Squad, as well as a finalist for the Debbie Lee Medal for most promising young player in the rebel VFLW. Fantastic achievements for a debut season in the VFLW.

Harvey Hooper and Corey Wagner were named alongside Phillips in the 40-player Smithy’s VFL Team of the Year Squad. Hooper racked up 415 disposals over 18 games (avg. 23.1 per match) and 93 tackles, an extremely consistent season in the midfield. Wagner, who unfortunately missed a few matches due to injury still managed to average 22.3 disposals per match and in the final 5 matches of the season tallied 138 disposals, averaging 27.6.
