By Zoe Greenhill, Borough Media on July 3, 2022

Port Melbourne have endured a tough loss against the Casey Demons on Saturday afternoon. Traveling to Casey Fields with near-perfect conditions, the Borough were presented with a Welcome to Country performed to acknowledge NAIDOC Week. The Borough fought hard, however, fell 58 points short of the win.

Harvey Hooper was again on fire around the ball. He walked away with 29 touches of the footy, 4 marks and 3 tackles. Corey Wagner was putting the pressure on constantly, with 7 tackles throughout the game and despite the significant loss, Cody Szust still kicked 3 goals for the match.

The boys were fired up and ready to go at the first bounce, however, a quick goal out of the centre went to Casey. The possession was then all in Port Melbourne’s hands. 4 unanswered goals set up for a 20-point lead 18 minutes into the game, creating a promising rest of the afternoon. Goals from Tom Cameron, Fletcher Roberts, Szust and Marcus Lentini showed Casey that the Borough weren’t afraid to challenge the un-defeated side. Szust was on fire, and kicked his second late in the first quarter before Casey secured a couple of late behinds, creating an 18-point lead for the Borough going into quarter time.

The second quarter showed some good footy from Casey, making it a difficult task for Port Melbourne. It wasn’t until the 14th minute that the Borough had a chance at goal, however, it only went through for a behind. 2 more behinds and no goal from the Borough put the game within 6-points at the major break leaving for some work to be done in the back half of the afternoon.

Port Melbourne looked promising coming out to the sunshine in the third quarter. An early goal to Fletcher Roberts put the game at an even playing field, before a game of Casey goal, Borough goal, Casey goal. The pressure was high around the ball and Port Melbourne were using the whole ground to hold possession looking to increase the lead once again. Casey was able to outrun the Borough and intercept possession, resulting in more goals. Going into the final break, Casey held a 21-point lead over Port Melbourne.

Unfortunately, Casey were the stronger side at the end of the day, defeating Port Melbourne by 58 points.

Next week, Port Melbourne are back at home on Saturday night at ETU stadium at 7:05pm against Carlton, looking for a second win under lights.

Casey 18.11 119 defeated Port Melbourne 6.13 61.
