VFLW Match Report – Round 12 vs. Casey Demons

For a change of scenery, the Borough girls headed down to the Casey Fields for their clash against the Casey Demons. With not a cloud in sight it was perfect condition to play a great game of footy and the girls definitely supplied great footy.

First quarter commences and Casey manage to kick the first goal of the day. It doesn’t take long for Brancatisano to pick up the ball, break through the pack and put the girls on the scoreboard. With Stutt going up for a mark and kicking it straight through the goals, this allowed us to get in front by 4. As the quarter came to a close the girls were already off to a cracking start with 2 goals. Although at quarter time Casey were keeping the lead by 3 points.

The second quarter commences and both teams are putting up a great fight and ten minutes in Casey manage to kick their second goal for the day. Casey gets a free kick outside the goal square and score another goal. This puts Casey in a 9-point lead, leaving the Borough girls quite nervous for the outcome. When Smith gets a free kick in front of the square the shift in feelings change when she uses it to the girl’s advantage, and it goes straight through the goals allowing the girls to catch up to Casey. Although when the siren sounds the girls are disappointed that they weren’t able to make more of a lead.

The girls run out onto the field again ready to take on the second half of the game. The Borough girls weren’t mucking around in the third quarter. Harley brings out the big guns and kick the Borough girl’s fourth goal, leaving the girls feeling a bit more comfortable with where they are at in the game. And again! Smith makes another appearance and snaps a good one right through the goal square. Jacques doesn’t let the girls stop their run as she uses her mark to get the girls their sixth goal. Casey gets the ball again and kicks a goal, but the girls don’t stand for that as they pass it to Harley who puts another goal on the scoreboard for the Borough girls. The third quarter concludes, and the Borough girls are happy with their 14-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Casey manages to get another goal as soon as the fourth quarter started but a beautiful goal from Barton allows the girls to keep a 13-point lead on Casey. Casey manage to get a few behinds narrowing the lead to only 10 points ,but it’s too late…the final siren sounds, and the girls are BACK!

Lachie gives us his thoughts on how the game went today and the girls’ performance out on the field, “Really good fourth quarter efforts, what I’ve been asking the girls for a couple of weeks to just bring the effort intensity for four quarters and the way they were able to maintain that was most pleasing today.”

The girls celebrate and go back into the rooms to sing the song that will never get old for the girls and the supporters of the Port Melbourne Football Club.

“Yeah, absolutely loved the way the girls performed today. They really played for each other, united and relentless approach and our pressure was really high which gave us first use of the footy and gave us opportunities inside forward 50 to retain it.”

And finally, as we do every week, we asked Lachie who he believes were the standouts in Saturday’s game, “Thought Smith was really good, Cordner set up really well down back and Bromage inside… You know she’s been fantastic all year and she took the game to another level today.”
