VFLW Match Report: Round 13 vs. North Melbourne

Sunny skies and no wind in the early afternoon of Sunday made it perfect conditions to be back on the footy oval, ETU Stadium.

With no spectators available, the atmosphere at Port Melbourne was strange, but that wasn’t stopping the girls from giving it their all on their first game back.

The first bounce hit the ground to commence game. 6 minutes passes in the first quarter and it is all kick to kick, but the Borough girls were able to keep the ball down our end for most of the quarter. North comes through and are able to snag the first goal leaving our Borough girls hunting down the ball so they can get their first score on the board. Richards doesn’t take long to receive the ball and kicks the first goal for the girls, making the scores level. With a slow start to the game, we were able to finish the first quarter with a goal on the scoreboard.

The second quarter comes around and Edmonds is straight in there. 13 minutes in and she kicks one directly through the goals. Ling copies her by kicking another goal soon after and giving us a strong 14 point lead. Although it was another slow start to the quarter, we were able to stop North from scoring at all during that quarter.

8 minutes into the third quarter and North were able to score their second goal. In the third quarter we weren’t able to score any goals, but we were able to snag a few behinds. It was another slow quarter, but the girls were ready to get out onto the ground and bring home the game in the last quarter, and that they did…

Here we go! 8 minutes into the final quarter and D’Arcy adds to the Borough goal score and makes it four. McCalland follows by adding another one onto the scoreboard, giving us a 29 point lead. Nothing is stopping these girls now. Wilson kicks a big bomb straight through the middle and just when we thought it was done, Dyett comes through with another goal leaving us with a very nice 43-point win!

It was a slow 3 quarters, but it all paid off in the final quarter. We managed to stop North from scoring any further goals.

Lachie also had some things to say about the slow start, “It’s good to be back after a couple of weeks off, it’s always a bit hard, you aren’t kicking the footy to each other. After we blew the cobwebs out for the first half the girls really started to come together and we kick 4 goals in the last quarter which was really pleasing to see.”

As final are creeping in, we ask Lachie the last few critiques he wants to iron out, “Really try to replicate that connection in the last quarter and do it through a whole game, it’s a bit tough having a massive lead in but our opportunity to continue to win and to get some form in before going to finals.”

As always, we always like to see who Lachie think the standout players were in Sunday’s match, “I thought Alice Edmonds was really good today, really gave us good use in the midfield. Bec Miller down back, Sophie Locke found some really good space at times and Clare Dyett was really good on the wing.”
