VFLW Match Report – Round 7 vs. Carlton

As the 15° temperature hit, the Borough girls were warming up getting ready to go head to head with the Carlton girls. Both teams were fired up and ready to bring on the fight.

The first quarter was a tough one for the Borough girls. Carlton were able to score 3 goals by the end of the quarter, leaving us with 0 goals. The girls were frustrated but far from giving up.

The media team were able to catch up with Lachie Harris after the game and have a chat to him about how he thought the game went., especially the first quarter. “We let them out of the gate. We were pretty reactive with our ball movement and with our mentality, we were kind of waiting for them to do something first. They got a 3-goal jump on us and we had to rectify that”.

As the second quarter comes around, it only takes Abbey Tanner 2 minutes for her to kick the first goal for the Borough and get us on the scoreboard. Nayely Borg doesn’t waste any time after Abbey when she kicks another goal for the Borough. Then with help from Sabrina Frederick, Holly Bailey managed to get in front of the goals and kick the girls 3rd of the match! Just as we thought we had them for the quarter the blues kick 2 goals straight. However Elizabeth Wilson is able to kick the ball 10m out from goal and it bounces perfectly through. By the end of the second quarter we are only down by 7 points.

The girls started to respond after the half time break and coach, Lachie Harris, was very proud of the girls. “Really proud with the way the girls responded, there was a little bit of a lapse there at the end of the second quarter but mentally we can continue to focus for the whole 20min of the quarter. It is a great learning opportunity for the girls, to help them identify that themselves”.

The start of third quarter and it doesn’t take long for the Carlton girls to come back as they kick their 6th goal of the match in the first few minutes. But the Borough girls find their rhythm once again as Sabrina Frederick makes the most of a free kick and lands the girls 5th goal of the game. Sabrina grabs the ball again after the centre bounce and bombs a big one allowing us to be 1 point in front by the end of that quarter.

As the last quarter hits, the Borough fans are on the edge of their seats. The Borough girls are putting up an amazing fight but so are the Carlton girls. It’s anyone’s game at this point. 6 minutes in and Clare Dyett doesn’t wait for anyone and brings up a 6 pointer. The ball was playing down Carlton’s end for most of the last quarter, but the Borough girls weren’t letting them win the ball or even score a point.
The final siren goes, and the girls leap with joy as they have just won’t their 7th game in a row and still hold the title of undefeated!

Finally, Lachie Harris was able to give us his thoughts on who he thought were the standouts for today’s match. “Really good contribution across the board. I thought Bridie Kennedy did a great job down back, Beth Wilson and Abbey Tanner did a mountain of work in the ruck and forward and I think they both helped the scoreboard so that is awesome for them”.

Well done to coach, Lachie Harris, and the Borough girls for holding another amazing game and another amazing win!!
