VFLW Match Report – Round 9 vs. Darebin Falcons

18 degrees and sunny. The Borough girls were feeling ready to go head-to-head with Darebin at the Northcote cricket ground at 12pm. As the siren commences for first quarter, the girls waste no time and Molan kicks a great goal from 10 metres out. It doesn’t take long after our first goal for Darebin to steady the ship and add a goal onto their scoreboard. Darebin get into a rhythm as they kick another goal. Em Harley brings the scores back close to even when she snaps one right in front of the goals.

As second quarter rolls around, the girls are fired up and it doesn’t stop as McClelland kicked a great goal to put us back in a comfortable lead. It doesn’t last long when only a few minutes later Darebin kick one more for their team leaving us with only a 3-point lead. Darebin waste no time and sneak one more goal in before quarter time. It was a jam-packed second quarter with goals from both teams going left, right and centre.

Third quarter starts and only 30 seconds in, Sophie Locke is back! She kicks a beauty from 15m out from the goal square! Em Harley compliments Locke’s goal as she kicks another one straight after, giving the girls a 9-point lead. Darebin put up a good fight and add another goal to their score, but we are still able to hold the lead by 3 points, leaving the girls on their toes. The Borough kick another goal leaving the girls back at a comfortable 9 point lead. Put that on the scoreboard!

As third quarter comes to an end, the girls are left with an 11-point lead to Darebin and goals from Molan, McClelland, Locke, and Harley with 2.

The siren sounds for the final quarter and the girls are still nervous. Em Harley seems to settle the nerves as she kicks another one for the Borough and another straight after that with assistance from Sabrina Frederick. The Borough girls leave Darebin on 5 goals and 3 behinds and do not allow them to score at all for the last quarter leaving us as winners!

Finals scores were Borough 57 defeated Darebin 33.

It only took 7 days for the winning vibes to come back.

Port Melbourne media team asked exclusive questions to Lachie Harris and how he thought the game went and if he was happy with the way the girls performed. “Really good to bounce back with a win, the girls were really focused on that. Darebin have been an improving outfit. A win is really good for the group”.

“I really tried to do some new things. Really being brave and taking the game on. It didn’t come off at times, but it continues to challenge their mindset.”

We also got Lachie to open up about his honest thoughts about today’s game. “We played to the opposition some of the time. We weren’t proactive enough for the footy. We were kind of steady in the back half. Take on some of the learning from the first half, where we were pretty poor to be honest. But it was good to get away.”

We also got to have a chat to Lachie Harris at the end of the day to see who he thinks the stands outs were in today’s game. “Em Harley 4 goals, great. Catherine Smith down back and Clare Dyett provided really good shape for us.”

Great job to coach, Lachie Harris and the Borough girls for another great and nail bitting game to watch. You made the atmosphere at the Northcote cricket ground unbelievable.

We all can’t wait to see what you bring to the table next week when you go up against the Southern Saints.
